Savage Garden live in South Africa @ Century City

There must be something in the fertilizer at Century City…. First of all a large atomic mushroom looking contraption erupts from the ground and shortly afterwards this futuristic structure goes bananas with a sound so awesome that my ear drums are still reverberating weeks afterwards from the sounds of screaming girls (and guys) that were literally fainting at the sight and sounds of the Aussie duo - Savage Garden.

On a stunning Sunday evening in the middle of the festive season the "Big Arena" (a name that does little justice to the afore mentioned structure) at Canal Walk was home to a concert by pop sensation Savage Garden. Delighting the crowd will numbers from both their "Savage Garden" CD as well as their latest offering - "Affirmation" this duo showed Cape Town their stuff - expert lyrics, ingenious instrumentals and a voice that oozes brilliance.

The pop duo - made up of Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones - stunned the crowd with songs such as "Truly Madly Deeply", "To The Moon And Back" and "I Want You" and demonstrated that there live sound is just as good as the one coming from any of their award winning CD's. From sound to lighting, to stage performance these boys put on a show that I am sure those that attended will not easily forget. "Ten out of ten" I heard a concert goer assert.

Originating from down under, Savage Garden, have been in business since 1996 and when their self titled debut album was released in March 1997 it entered the charts at #1 and notched up 13 weeks at the top, the third longest stay for any Australian-made album!
Their second offering "Affirmation" did equally well - despite the two band members living on different continents and lyrics and chords being discussed over the phone and in e-mails! Not bad, I say.

Ahh... and the name I hear you ask… It comes out of an Anne Rice vampire novel entitled: "The Vampire Lestat". Vampires, apparently call their world a savage garden. Strange, but true….

So, in conclusion, this reviewer goes with a ten out of ten rating. These guys are slick. To say the least.

(and as always a big hand of applause to Big Concerts!)
