BOOK REVIEW
Disobedience - Naomi Alderman
Ruth Bradbury-Horton

Disobedience explores the intrigues and intricacies of an orthodox Jewish Community - in Hendon, North-London - as they come to terms with the death of their beloved and esteemed Rav Krushka.

Ronit, the Rav's estranged daughter, returns for the funeral hell bent on continuing her now-liberal New York lifestyle, and inevitably endures the scrutiny and rejection of old friends and acquantincies.

Esti on the other hand is a different kettle of fish. A typical good-Jewish-wife, albeit quiet and reserved, who is suddenly forced to confront her feelings for Ronit. Feelings that are based on an act of disobedience against their faith, committed together as young women.

If you're not Jewish, you might find - as I did - that some of the phrases and references in Hebrew a little confusing, Likewise, at the start of each chapter there is a religious text that outlines the context of the chapter. But don't let that put you off. It's a great chick-lit book.
