Crossing the Divide in Northern Ireland
The Good Friday agreement of 1998 represented a watershed moment in the history of Northern Ireland. In a country long reeling with internal conflict between Catholics and Protestants, the move represented a long awaited vote for peace. Still, many problems remain, and since the agreement violence has flared up again and again. In spite of a move toward peace, the country is still rife with distrust and enmity and is, essentially, divided.

A Strange New Journalism
"We were somewhere near Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like 'I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive . . .' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: 'Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals!?' "

Historical Labyrinths in the Kweekskool
The thin oak branches silhouette against a clean winter sky. The pock of bat on ball echoes in the morning air. The large white fortress seams peaceful, hiding behind its walls the countless mysteries of relics and a stairway leading nowhere, or maybe to heaven.

GAME REVIEWS

SSX 3
Get out your snowboard, buy your lift tickets, breathe the cold mountain air, and get ready to be thrilled. SSX 3, the latest in EA Sports' acclaimed snowboarding franchise has arrive, and it’s been worth the wait.

Total Club Manager 2004
If you've dreamt of masterminding a European Cup success, think you could do better than Alex Ferguson, or know just which players Lazio should sign to finally get somewhere in Europe, EA Sports' Total Club Manager 2004 (TCM 2004) is just the game for you!

Cricket 2004
In the impoverished world of cricket games there has never been much to write home about. The Brian Lara series and Cricket 2002 were approached respectability, but even they disappointed. Now EA Sports Cricket 2004 has raised the notch, but is it enough?

Biography

Biographical Sketch

Marcus is one of our finest young literary wannabes. By sheer determination, nihilism and a love for the absurd he imagines he might one day write the great modernist novel. In the meantime he is honing his skills as a freelance journalist, musician and by painstakingly examining Crime and Punishment for a clue to the secret of representing madness.

  • COLUMNS
    France’s secular ideal
In December French president Jacques Chirac announced his support for a new law that will prohibit the wearing of Muslim headscarves, Jewish skullcaps, and large crucifixes in public schools. Not surprisingly, the move has sparked a fierce public debate.

    Make the Africans English, yeh
It is European Champions League night on Super Sport. On screen is Gary, Terry and co, complete with their Woollies biltong and everything. But what's happening off-screen? One might be forgiven for thinking there's a Union Jack hanging in the corner, or a wax figure of the Queen that is periodically knelt to. Did they sing God save the Queen before going on air? Quite likely.

    SPORTS COLUMNS
    Unpredictability
Is sports just another kind of reality TV, or is reality based TV shows, just another kind of sport. There are rules, objectives, people and cameras. True. Sure, surviving the Big Brother house is not quite the same as winning Wimbledon, Yet, both differ from other forms of entertainment in their lack of predictability and unscripted nature.

    Crunch time for Gunners
Without doubt, Arsenal has been one of world football's form sides over the past few months. But as the season draws to its climax, the truly important questions remain to be answered. They are definitely a good team, but are they great?

    Good luck Mr. Baxter
Shortly before Bafana Bafana left for the 2002 world cup finals, SAFA managed to estrange the, then manager, Carlos Queiroz. He was replaced by Jomo Sono, and even though we didn't play too badly, we did not make it passed the first round.
