34 South to have its world premiere at Pan African Film Festival
Kevin Kriedemann
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
34 SOUTH TO HAVE ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT PAN AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL
The Western Cape release of 34 South has been delayed until 11 March, to allow the history-making film to premiere at The Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles (Feb 10-21), where it was selected to compete from over a thousand submissions. 34 South has also been approached to open The Cape Town Festival in March.
Maganthrie Pillay, South Africa’s first black female feature film director, is available for interviews in Cape Town to talk about 34 South and the festivals. Maganthrie, who is fluent in English and Afrikaans, will also be available in Jo’burg on February 14 and 15.
FULL STORY
34 South is the wickedly funny story of Frank September and his mates, who are desperate to leave Cape Town and get to Jo’burg. Unfortunately, they have no money, no transport and no contacts in The City of Gold. Not put off by mere
technicalities, the crew set out on the ride of their lives. 34 South is a heartwarming and thought-provoking road-movie about sex, drugs and ballroom dancing.
The Western Cape release of 34 South has been delayed until 11 March, to allow the history-making film to premiere at The Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles (Feb 10-21), where it was selected to compete from over 1000 submissions.
Under the direction of PAFF executive director Ayuko Babu, the 2005 PAFF program will showcase a diverse selection of Black films: features, shorts, documentaries and studio/network releases. PAFF is dedicated to the promotion of cultural and racial tolerance and understanding through the exhibition of film, art and creative expression.
"Last year's festival demonstrated the incomparable class of PAFF as the leading film festival for Black filmmakers and an international film showcase," said Babu. "Through displaying positive images of Blacks in film, we look
forward to continuing our tradition of excellence in giving Black filmmakers from around the world a voice."
34 South has also been approached to open The Cape Town Festival in March. The Cape Town Festival is the official arts, culture and heritage festival for The City of Cape Town, showcasing the full spectrum of arts genres, ranging from music, theatre and visual arts to dance, comedy and film.
This year’s Cape Town Festival boasts a record number of 27 productions, totaling a whopping 71 dance, music and theatre performances. An exciting addition to the festival format is the Cape Town Comedy Festival hosted by top local funny-man Kurt Schoonraad. Best of all, most of the festival happenings are free!
While Maganthrie is proud to be South Africa’s first Black female feature film director, she is also outraged. “With a hundred year history, we only have three other women, all of whom are White, who have made feature films. What does that say about South
Africa? What does that say about our industry? To be the first Black woman simply highlights the fact that there are thousands of other stories that need to be made.”
34 South opens in Cape Town at The Labia, The Jewel of the North and Cinemax on Friday, March 11,2005, as part of a unique province by province distribution plan. Maganthrie, who is fluent in both English and Afrikaans, will be available for interviews in Cape Town to coincide with 34 South’s eagerly anticipated release. She will also be available in Jo’burg on February 14 and February 15. Photos of Maganthrie and images from the film are available on request.
