REVIEWS
O Brother Where Art Thou?
The Coen brothers are back and all logic-loving people should stand well clear.

Dancer in the Dark
Selma, the protagonist in Dancer in the Dark, is a woman obsessed with Hollywood musicals, even though she has never seen one through to the end. She whimsically explains it away by saying that if you leave before the finale, the film’s magic never dies.

The Planet of the Apes
Films come and go, and for the most part pass without notice. There are however films which burst onto the screen and leave a lasting impact on audiences the world over. The Planet of the Apes is such a film.

Titan AE (2000)
3D animation and computer generated visual effects, combined with fantastic voice talents not only make Titan: AE an epic space saga that will enthrall audiences young and old alike, but will almost certainly prove to be a landmark in animated film.

Movies from Mars, Women from Venus
The transition from novel to screen is a notoriously limiting one. Directors often find it difficult to decide which segments to cut and which to focus on. Sadly, in the case of women authors, it is usually the feminine sensibility that winds up on the cutting room floor.

Moralistic Mayhem
On the heels of the terrorist attacks in America, the release of Jurassic Park III in South Africa could not have been more ominously timed, as man again tries to come to terms with the devastating extent of his/her predisposition for violence.

Heist Films
When, in The Exorcist, detective Kindermann attributes the popularity of the devil to the fact that he advertises, he isn’t simply hitting on a theological truth. He is referring to a phenomenon prevalent in a range of film genres, not least of all in the genre of the heist movie.

Blow
Johnny Depp is high again – this time in Blow. The film joins a list of drug movies that, despite a few sorry examples, (like the blown vein that is Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), have proven to be a rich source of material, reflecting societal attitudes ranging from anti to ambivalent.

Out of Bounds
A deserved standing ovation rounded off a compelling performance of this FNB Award winning play, although the audience could have been forgiven for mistaking the anecdotal one man act for the stand up routine of a finely polished comic

Grinder - Reaching the Parts Other Sperms Cannot Reach
Whether you’re of the opinion that the axing of The Toasty Show was a loss for television or not, one thing is for certain – it was most definitely a boon for the theatre placing Bevan Cullinan back where he belongs.
